Governmental Agencies
Governmental agencies are typically faced with similar issues and concerns:
Information Security: Government’s IT systems contain highly confidential and sensitive information that involves national and citizen security. Any release of such information will have significant security and legal ramifications. Many recyclers claim that they destroy data in the hard drives. But how can we ensure that the contracted service provider truly destroys confidential information? Skip down to "SSI's Solution."
Fortune 500 to Medium-Sized Businesses
All companies have questions and concerns when it comes to properly disposing of their assets. This includes complying with regulations when disposing of such assets - especially those that contain data and require proper reporting of the disposal of those assets on the company's financials.
- Data Security and Privacy Mandates
- Gramm-Leach Bliley Act: Financial data security.
- The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) 2005: Rule on disposal of sensitive consumer report information.
- The Computer Security Act 1987
- The Computer Matching and Privacy Protection Act 1988
- The Electronic Communications Privacy Act
- HIPAA: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) - security, privacy and transaction rules.
- Sarbanes-Oxley Act
- Accurate disclosure of financial information.
Non-compliance with these acts can quickly result in costly fines and penalties, litigation, and negative media attention.
SSI's Solution
- Industry Certifications are one of the key criteria to measure a recycler’s capability for data destruction. SSI is one of the very few recyclers in the industry to attain the stringent NAID (National Association for Information Destruction)* Certification on Computer Data Sanitization and Destruction. This certification requires comprehensive security systems including secure chain-of-custody procedures, transportation security, data sanitization procedures as per DoD 5220.22-M specifications, guaranteed and certified shredding and physical destruction of hard drives, data destruction verification protocol, employee background checks and drug tests, facility security, 24-hour surveillance system, etc. Such certifications and abilities are what assure our customers that their information is being securly demanufactured and destroyed/recycled - in the most environmentally responsible way.
NAID randomly selected SSI’s sanitized hard drives for verification at a forensic laboratory. All of the data in SSI’s hard drives was 100% sanitized.
The Department of Homeland Security utilizes SSI’s services because of SSI’s exceptional capability in safeguarding the destruction of all confidential and proprietary information. This is the highest honor that any recycling service provider could have.
- Chain-of-Custody: Nothing is compromised throughout the entire asset disposition process. SSI has developed a rigorous procedure to secure the assets at every mission-critical step from pickup, in-transit, receiving, processing to the final destruction of confidential information. Both SSI's staff and logistics partners have to go through SSI's Secured Chain-of-Custody Training Program. This stringent program ensures the secured execution of the entire asset disposition process.
Logistics Nightmares: Many governmental buildings or warehouses are without loading docks have low-ceiling loading docks. In addition, there are no laborers, no packing materials, no pallets/shrink-wrap to pack or move to the loading docks. Furthermore, some of the large Federal agencies have hundreds of small facilities throughout the U.S., including remote areas like Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. It is very difficult for many recyclers to manage such logistic complexity.
SSI has effectively helped many Federal and State agencies resolve their tough logistic challenges. No matter what complicated situations you are in, SSI's National Logistics Management Program will take care of them efficiently, accurately and quickly.
SSI’s National Logistics Management Program was designed to provide solutions to every possible scenario that you may face. This encompasses some unique programs:
White Glove Service Program:
No laborers, no packing materials, no pallets, no loading dock? No problem!
No matter where you are or how big/small your project is, SSI can send packing specialists to help you pack and remove all the equipment out of your premises in a timely manner. SSI has trained packing specialists to adhere to the rigorous security protocols under SSI’s Secured Chain-of-Custody Program.
UPS Shipping Program:
If you only have a small amount of equipment for recycling and have packaged it in boxes, you can print out UPS shipping labels directly from SSI's website! This is a very easy process.
National Transportation Program:
No matter where you are, SSI can transport your equipment to its recycling facilities by Truckload or Less than Truckload (LTL) method. If you do not have loading docks, SSI will send trucks with a liftgate. SSI also has the capability to move equipment with ease via water or air at such remote areas where no land transportation is available.
Packaging Material Request Program:
Want packing cartons? You got it! SSI will send you a variety of boxes for packing desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, etc.
Report Demands: The government has stringent demands for in-depth reports and certification of destruction. Every asset disposition has to be traceable, accountable and auditable in order to meet the auditing demands by law. Many recyclers do not have the capability to provide the level of detailed reports that government agencies require. Checkout the section of SSI's website that explains in detail its comprehensive and customized report system. Go to the "One Source Solutions" tab at the top of the page and click on "Valuable Management Reports."
All governmental agencies that utilize SSI’s integrated recycling services have complimented SSI for its accurate and detailed reports.
One of the key separators of SSI versus industry peers is SSI’s impeccable ability to provide high-level reports to customers. These in-depth and comprehensive reports empower SSI's customers to make intelligent business decisions. They are also particularly important to governmental agencies and corporations that need to comply with all of the detailed auditing requirements demanded by law.
SSI’s robust information system can customize any report format or detail that customers desire. Many customers are amazed at SSI's capability in delivering exceptional processing, settlement and analytical reports once their needs are understood and the reasons behind these needs. This level of report excellence is rarely found in the industry.
Manufacturers (OEMs)
The demands and objectives of OEMs are vastly different from other non-OEM entities. SSI recognizes that OEMs are usually facing the following major pains and concerns when identifying the right electronics recycling management company:
Integrity: The major demands of OEMs are to ensure that all of the off-lease, obsolete, defective and off-book equipment is completely demanufactured. Many OEMs are burned by recyclers that secretly resell their equipment or parts. This has caused significant business, legal and environmental problems.
SSI's Solution
- SSI has earned its reputation among the OEM community for high integrity. Most OEM customers are leading global electronics manufacturers. It is SSI's goal to protect them from any legal and environmental liabilities. Under SSI’s management, rigorous secured Chain-of Custody procedures have been instituted to ensure that no equipment will return back into the market from the entire pickup, in-transit, receiving all the way to the demanufacturing process.
- SSI will also provide comprehensive reports to its OEM customers detailing the results of each shipment. This completes accountability and ensures customers that all demanufacturing and proper destruction/recycling of the equipment has occurred, and that no unwanted equipment is back in the marketplace.
SSI's 3R Turnkey Management System: OEMs want to focus on their core competency. They do not want to be bothered by logistics details from coordinating and shipping equipment from their customers’ sites or their own distribution centers (DCs). OEMs need a service partner who is capable of managing turnkey projects nationally or even globally.
SSI's Solution
- SSI has effectively helped many OEMs transport their equipment nationally, whether from their customers’ sites or their DCs. SSI is responsible for coordination communication, negotiating the best logistic costs to save OEMs money and ensuring that each and every shipment will be picked up and delivered on time. SSI's turnkey management system has not only relieved OEMs from spending valuable time on noncore competent tasks, but most importantly, SSI has also generated significant logistics savings for OEMs.
Best Recycling Management Standards: Leading OEMs are very concerned about environmental stewardship and sustainability. OEMs cannot afford to have their name and equipment end up in any domestic or foreign landfills. The negative impact to the company image can create disastrous results.
SSI's Solution
- SSI is the only recycling service company in the industry that has attained six (6) prestigious certifications. This status reflects SSI’s high quality of its Best Management Standards in the electronics recycling industry. As a result, OEMs who utilize SSI's service are greatly relieved from environmental and legal liabilities:
- ISO 9001 (Quality Management System),
- ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System)
- National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) Electronic Data Sanitization and Destruction
- OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety)
- R2 (EPA's Responsible Recycling standard)
- RIOS (ISRI's Recycling Industry's Operating System)
- SSI provides complete recycling services to many major electronics manufacturers in the consumer electronics, industrial electronics, office equipment, instrumentation electronics and medical electronics industries. SSI possesses exceptional knowledge and skills in identifying the best approach to recycle a wide variety of equipment so that the optimal material recovery rate can be achieved. SSI is the only company in the recycling industry that has management staff with a Ph.D. in Material Sciences.
- SSI, due to its’ Best Management Practices established by Jade Lee, was invited in 2007 by the U.S. EPA to become an industry representative to develop the Responsible Recycling (R2) standards for the electronics recycling industry. R2 has strict requirements on Focus Materials (circuit board, CRT glass, battery, lamp and toner) Management, Export Control Management, Downstream Processor Due Diligence, Data Security Management, Environmental Management System, Health, Safety and Security Management, etc. SSI’s leadership in the industry was recognized by the U.S. EPA to establish important benchmarking standards for selection of responsible electronics recyclers.
