Abstract

The CIO of one of our Fortune 500 corporate customers recently attended an exclusive CIO conference on Cyber Security. He was astonished to learn that many companies have spent millions of dollars to secure the front end to make sure that their – and their customers’ – confidential information will not be hacked; however, on the back end, most CIOs have no idea how their organizations dispose of their technology equipment, nor do they have clear disposal procedures in place. In other words, while the front door is secure, the back door is left wide open so that confidential information is given away. At Supply-Chain Services, Inc. (SSI), we encounter this situation often in our daily conversations with potential customers.

The back-end security should involve the same scrutiny as the front-end security. Negligence may lead to millions of dollars in financial penalties. In this paper, we would like to share some best practices on instituting a comprehensive technology asset policy and selecting a technology asset disposal service provider.
