Shaping the Industry with Responsible IT Recycling

SSI is dedicated to protecting human health and the environment by incorporating environmental laws and sound environmental principles into its business decisions.

Electronic Recycling IndustryThe following environmental principles provide guidance to SSI’s daily business practices:

  • To operate in a professional manner, to respect the environment, health and safety of our employees, associates, customers, suppliers, and community neighbors.
  • To comply with all applicable environmental laws.
  • To eliminate pollution, reduce waste, and to maximize recyclable materials at every stage of operations.
  • To promote environmental awareness among SSI associates to minimize environmental impacts.
  • To communicate closely with our local community, the EPA and other environmental organizations to continuously improve our environmental performance.

SSI is a founding member of the International Association of Electronics Recyclers (IAER) based in New York. Major U.S. electronics recyclers, as well as OEMs such as IBM, Hewlett Packard, and Xerox, are members of IAER.

SSI’s owner, Jade Lee, is currently a board member of IAER and was the Program Chair for IAER’s 2004 Electronics Recycling Summit jointly held with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

SSI, due to its industry-leading Best Management Practices, was invited in 2007 by the U.S. EPA to become an industry representative to develop the Responsible Recycling (R2) standards for the electronics recycling industry. R2 has strict requirements on Focus Materials (circuit board, CRT glass, battery, lamp and toner) Management, Export Control Management, Downstream Processor Due Diligence, Data Security Management, Environmental Management System, Health, Safety and Security Management, etc. SSI’s leadership in the industry was recognized by the U.S. EPA to establish important benchmarking standards for the selection of responsible electronics recyclers.

Why SSI?

What Makes SSI Different?

SSI possesses several unique capabilities and qualifications. It is these core competencies that set SSI far apart from peers in the industry:

  • SSI is the only recycler in the United States that holds SIX key industry certifications (ISO 14001, ISO 9001, NAID’s Data Sanitization and Destruction, OHSAS 18001, and R2/RIOS responsible recycling certifications).
  • SSI has just upgraded IAER to the new Industry Standard R2/RIOS Certification since January 2010.
  • This unique credential demonstrates that SSI has a well-run organization. By employing SSI’s service, United Parcel Service (UPS) can rely on SSI to deliver its objectives and goals while greatly relieving it from environmental and data security liabilities. The value of SSI transcends project cost issues.
  • SSI is one of the very few recyclers in the U.S. that have capability in processing and remarketing all types of electronics, not just IT equipment. In addition to IT systems, SSI can also recycle and remarket other electronic equipment used in all of UPS’s facilities.
  • SSI can provide a Turnkey Solution in managing transportation, labor, information capturing, recycling and remarketing. SSI has a unique capability and process in understanding customers’ needs and wants and delivering them for our customers.
  • SSI has a strong capability in remarketing items. Our revenue share is among the highest in the industry.
  • SSI provides the most comprehensive, customized and detailed reports in the industry. This report system will empower UPS management to understand the details of their asset disposition. It will also help UPS meet all the report requirements. We can customize any report that UPS desires. This is a capability that many recyclers do not possess.
  • SSI has a strong IT capability. We use a cutting-edge information system to manage, monitor, track and control our operations. We are also equipped with exceptional capability to provide in-depth analytical reports to customers. SSI can work with the DOE on any system integration issue and utilize technology to effectively compete in the marketplace.
